One thing that I have noticed from my observation experience
(and some past personal experiences, sadly) is that a lot of students do not
enjoy reading. The problem is that they
see reading as simply a task to do for school; therefore they do not get motivated
to complete reading assignments. Something
that I have seen that tends to work with students is to allow them to choose
what they read. Obviously, this does not
work all the time, because there are required materials. They should be allowed, however, to pick
their own reading assignment and have them write some sort of essay over
it. This allows the students to read
something that interests them and hopefully helps them to become more motivated
all around about reading in general.
Another thing is to have the students read to themselves (as opposed to
groups all the time) and find any general questions that they may have within
the reading. When they do this and you
can successfully explain the questions and help them to not get discouraged
when they do not understand everything that they are reading.
